Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park Illinois in 1898. He was the first child out of two boys.  His father Clarence Edmonds “Doc Ed” Hemingway  and his mother raised him with little religious background compare to the strict life of protestanism in Oak Park. As a young boy, Hemingway’s mother wanted for him to be like her and follow her love for the music and arts. However, Hemmingway develop the same nterests his father had towards hunting, fishing and camping. His early relations with nature drove him to be more connected and isolated bringing his outdoors passion of nature.

As a young teen he began his first writting pieces in the school’s news paper and by his senior year he was already the editor of the paper. However, Hemingway didnt continue his writting career and he went against his father’s wishes and approached the United States Army. In spite of his attempt, He failed his physical do to a poor vision condition which drove him to join the Red Cross Abulance corps in world war I. His first stop was in Italy were he trid to get as close as possible to combat which made him witness the brutality and reality of war as an explotion happen and he had to rescue the remains of the dead woman and children that had dies in his own eyes.  Later in journey hemmingways gets harmed severely, He was hit by an Austrian trench mortar  that left  fragments in his legs as well as he got hit by gun fire.

As he recovered in Milan, he falls in love with one of the nurses that took care of him.  Agnes von Kurowsky was his inpiration for his first novel  ¨farewell to arms¨. The reason why is beacuse she didnt follow their plans and as he return to US she stayed with an italian soldier which drove him to depression and Alcoholism. This drove him to Write his first romantic Short story “A Very Short Story,”¨which was publish in 1925.

Hemmingway’s style was very simple and straigh to the point which set him apart from the rest of the writers at the time. His journalistic background played a big part in his style as well, making his stories short and informative in  a directly point of view. Even though he did not spent much time giving details about the characters, the setting and the atmosphere of his stories developed the characters and gave and interesting read. His work is fiction and His protagonist are typically men who exhibit an ideal described as “grace under pressure.”
